ICPHSO International Symposium

ICPHSO_Brussels_2018_Branding1022x376

Dear Safety Professional,

As we head into the fall in North America, it’s often time to reflect on where we have been.  During the past year, ICPHSO kicked off its 25th Silver Jubilee Anniversary Year with our Annual Symposium in Orlando, Florida.  From there, we moved west to Seattle where we held our Northwest Regional Training Workshop hosted by Amazon.  Next up is our International Symposium in less than 60 days! It’s been a busy year indeed.  In between, we also collaborated with ASTM International on a one day workshop in Washington, D.C. on Age Grading.  In Brussels we are again collaborating with the European Commission during its International Product Safety Week.  ICPHSO kicks off the week with our Symposium on November 12-13, 2018, and we are excited with the topics of discussion that are starting to be posted on our website.  We anticipate a broad range of safety professionals who will be speaking on a number of different subjects of keen interest to the global product safety community.  We also anticipate a large number of European regulators to join with regulators from North America, South America, Asia and Australia at this important safety conference.

ICPHSO’s 25th anniversary also happens to coincide with the 60th anniversary of The Smurfs, which was created by a Belgian cartoonist in 1928.  It’s only fitting that we celebrate our milestone together in Brussels in 2018, since ICPHSO exists to bring together the product safety community in a neutral setting where all safety professionals can learn, train and network with each other.  Our goals mirror the Smurfs which are all about friendship, tolerance, solidarity and respect of others and nature.  As ICPHSO focuses on our Inclusion Initiative which will be discussed in more detail in Brussels during our closing session on the first day, we look forward to being more inclusive and diverse in the future.  Like the Smurfs, we transcend borders and welcome all.  A special thanks to Joan Lawrence at The Toy Association and Jakks Pacific for providing us a limited number of Smurf toys for ICPHSO attendees in recognition of our joint anniversary year.  I hope to see you in Brussels and be sure to check back on our website for updated information on the Symposium agenda.  New content is being posted daily.  We also still have many sponsorship opportunities available so be sure to contact me if interested in pursuing any of these opportunities.

As we  celebrate ICPHSO’s 25th Anniversary year we announced a new “Inclusion Initiative” with the goal of taking ICPHSO’s longstanding commitment to stakeholder inclusion to an even higher level within the product safety community. This initiative is being led by ICPHSO member Carol Roberts and the team she is leading will include additional ICPHSO members and participants from our stakeholder community.  The initiative will be featured as part of our International Symposium in Brussels.  Additional information is coming and will be posted when available.  Here’s some initial information on the Inclusion Initiative.

Enjoy your summer and hope to see you in Brussels!

ICPHSO Announces Inclusion Initiative

CarolRobertsInclusion2018

Carol Roberts speaking at ICPHSO NW Regional Workshop Reception on June 19, 2018

At the conclusion of ICPHSO’s 2018 Northwest Regional Product Safety Training Workshop in Seattle, WA, Belinda May, President of the International Consumer Product Health and Safety Organization (ICPHSO) announced a new Inclusion Initiative to be led by ICPHSO member, Carol Roberts, an Associate in Cooley’s London Litigation department, and part of the International Product Liability and Product Compliance Team.  Below are  notes from Carol’s kick off discussion explaining the newly announced initiative, which she presented at the Amazon Meeting Center, Seattle, Washington on June 19, 2018, after the one-day regional workshop.

Empowering others:  it’s about including those who aren’t or weren’t included in the conversation and decision making.

  • Benefits of doing this are really well documented – what could this mean for product safety?
  • ICPHSO is already established as an organization that looks to include and involve:  we see this in the committees that chip in to make these conferences happen; in the range of panels and represented stakeholders and the emphasis on ensuring a broad range of voices are heard.
  • This will make my job easier – and harder!
  • What do we hope for, for this task force?
    • Hope to identify, develop and share best practices and experiences on what successful diversity and inclusion looks like.
    • Hope to continue to build on existing opportunities to network and learn from a diverse range of stakeholders and on a diverse range of topics.
    • Hope to continue to ensure ICPHSO’s place at the heart and forefront of thinking in the product safety community, with a strong focus and leading presence in this important area.
  • Inclusion is in the name and its the goal – I’d love to hear any ideas and welcome others getting involved.  Please do get in touch with me.  Here’s a link to my email address:  Carol Roberts.

As ICPHSO celebrates its 25th Silver Anniversary, we will apply 25 years of shared collaboration with the aim of taking ICPHSO’s longstanding commitment to stakeholder inclusion to an even higher level within the product safety community. Congratulations to Belinda May for proposing and implementing this initiative and to Carol Roberts for leading the initiative.  Please send your thoughts and ideas to Carol or me as we continue to move ICPHSO to an even higher level in the future.

Regards,

Marc

Only 113 days to Seattle!

Can you believe it?  Here we are only a few days out of our 2018 Annual Meeting and Training Symposium and only 113 days to go (June 19, 2018)  until our Northwest Regional Product Safety Training Workshop at Amazon in Seattle, Washington.  Board Members DE Fenton and Renee Chiang are actively working on the Northwest Regional Meeting.  We hope to roll out our theme, call for presentations and hotel information in the next couple of weeks.  At the same time, Board Member Rod Freeman is working with the European Commission (EC) to further develop ICPHSO’s 2018 International Symposium November 12-13, 2018 in Brussels, Belgium.  The EC’s International Product Safety Week takes place November 12-15, 2018.  As details become available, I will report on them.   We are also working again with ASTM to develop a one-day workshop on April 13, 2018 at Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C. on age label guidelines.  You will want to save the date and not miss this unique one day workshop which will include experts in this area.

2018 Symposium Highlights:

From Tutorials to our Key Note speakers on Block Chain Technology and the CPSC, we think we offered something for everyone last week during the kick-off of our 25th Silver Jubilee Anniversary Year.   Belinda May, as Symposium Planning Chair and now President,  really put on a  great training meeting. It will certainly be hard to top what we did, although I am confident we certainly will try!  We are working hard to upload all the final presentations and provide an updated final Symposium attendee list as soon as we can.  We had over 825 attendees from 18 countries in attendance and I want to thank each of you for the choice you made to attend our Annual Symposium.  The support you provide allows us to bring you the type of content filled Symposia you have come to expect from us.  Incoming President Matt Howsare is already working on our 2019 Annual Meeting and Training Symposium which will be held Monday, February 25 through Thursday, February 28, 2019 at the Marriott Renaissance Downtown, Washington, DC.  We were last at this hotel in 2016 and we are looking forward to our return next year.

I wanted to reference a few highlights from our 2018 Annual Symposium.

Tutorials included, CPSC Compliance Beginners and Refresher course; sessions on the regulation of Drones; Lithium Ion Batteries; Ethics and Product Safety; Leveraging the Reach of Health and Human Service Providers to Enhance Consumer Product Safety and How to Make Retailers Happy among others.

New ICPHSO Executive Committee Officers include:  President:  Belinda May, Dentons LLC; President Elect and 2019 Symposium Planning Chairman: Matt Howsare, Mintz Levin; and Vice President:  Rick Rosati, Bureau Veritas. New ICPHSO Board Members include: Tabatha Bauer, Staples; Andy Church, Insight Quality Services; Don Huber, Consumer Reports; and Matt Smith, ICIX.  Read the Press Release Here

Also,we want to welcome to the Board as Ex-Officio Members, Geoff Barrett, Health Canada and Carol Cave, U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

We were honored to be able to provide Health Canada, PROFECO and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission the opportunity to sign a trilateral memo of understanding at our Symposium which will promote consumer product safety in North America.  We were all  witness to something quite historic as a result. Read the Press Release Here

We also announced that Carol-Pollack Nelson was the recipient of the 2018 Ross Koeser Achievement Award.  The award, named after one of our Founders and First Executive Director annually recognizes a member for their significant contributions to ICPHSO.  Carol indeed exemplifies this through her work as a volunteer, former Board Member and President.  Carol also was the coordinator of our very successful 25th Anniversary Splitsville Bowling event, attended by some 350 of our attendees.  The food, drinks, bowling, games, deserts,  and company was outstanding.   ICPHSO also announced a special service award that was given to long-term member Bruce Farquhar for his continued outstanding in assuring ICPHSO has a global presence especially with international regulators.

And finally, who can forget our 25th anniversary year kick off fireworks event held Tuesday evening after our welcome reception.  Over ten minutes of up close and personal fireworks celebrating ICPHSO and its anniversary.  Our thanks again to John Rogers, Executive Director, AFSL and PYROTECNICO for a show we won’t soon forget.  It was a great way to kick off our anniversary year.

Thanks again to all attendees, speakers, sponsors, exhibitors, gift card and gift bag sponsors and a special thanks to Association Manager, Kimber Nation;  Association Administrator, Tara Reddy ; and to Yvette Duron and Emma Celeste for assisting us during the Symposium.  Without the continued support and assistance from Kimber and Tara, this meeting would never have taken place.   I hope to provide more updates on specific sessions in the future as well as update you on upcoming events.  Follow my blog for updates.

Regards,

Marc
