Dear Safety Professional,
As we head into the fall in North America, it’s often time to reflect on where we have been. During the past year, ICPHSO kicked off its 25th Silver Jubilee Anniversary Year with our Annual Symposium in Orlando, Florida. From there, we moved west to Seattle where we held our Northwest Regional Training Workshop hosted by Amazon. Next up is our International Symposium in less than 60 days! It’s been a busy year indeed. In between, we also collaborated with ASTM International on a one day workshop in Washington, D.C. on Age Grading. In Brussels we are again collaborating with the European Commission during its International Product Safety Week. ICPHSO kicks off the week with our Symposium on November 12-13, 2018, and we are excited with the topics of discussion that are starting to be posted on our website. We anticipate a broad range of safety professionals who will be speaking on a number of different subjects of keen interest to the global product safety community. We also anticipate a large number of European regulators to join with regulators from North America, South America, Asia and Australia at this important safety conference.
ICPHSO’s 25th anniversary also happens to coincide with the 60th anniversary of The Smurfs, which was created by a Belgian cartoonist in 1928. It’s only fitting that we celebrate our milestone together in Brussels in 2018, since ICPHSO exists to bring together the product safety community in a neutral setting where all safety professionals can learn, train and network with each other. Our goals mirror the Smurfs which are all about friendship, tolerance, solidarity and respect of others and nature. As ICPHSO focuses on our Inclusion Initiative which will be discussed in more detail in Brussels during our closing session on the first day, we look forward to being more inclusive and diverse in the future. Like the Smurfs, we transcend borders and welcome all. A special thanks to Joan Lawrence at The Toy Association and Jakks Pacific for providing us a limited number of Smurf toys for ICPHSO attendees in recognition of our joint anniversary year. I hope to see you in Brussels and be sure to check back on our website for updated information on the Symposium agenda. New content is being posted daily. We also still have many sponsorship opportunities available so be sure to contact me if interested in pursuing any of these opportunities.

I hope you will be joining us in Brussels on November 12-13, 2018 for ICPHSO’s 2018 International Symposium. Registration is coming soon but you can go ahead and make your hotel reservation now as well as sign up for sponsorship opportunities. The ICPHSO Symposium starts on Monday, November 12, 2018 and runs through Tuesday, November 13, 2018. International Product Safety Week runs through November 15, 2018. ICPHSO will again provide attendees networking breaks, lunch and an evening reception on Monday, November 12 at the conference venue. On Tuesday, breakfast, breaks and lunch will also be provided to attendees. The European Commission will hold an off site reception and dinner at Noble Palace, Tuesday evening, November 13, 2018. Space will be limited and bus transportation will be provided from the conference venue. All ICPHSO Symposium attendees will be welcome to attend this off-site reception and dinner. Additional details and registration will be posted on the ICPHSO website.
Enjoy your summer and make your fall plans now to attend the Symposium!
ICPHSO INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM
PLANNING COMMITTEE VOLUNTEERS WANTED
The time has come for us to convene the Planning Committee to help us bring together our 2018 International Symposium in Brussels in November. The Symposium will be held during the European Commission’s International Product Safety Week. The theme for the Symposium is “Alignment and Inclusion in a Divergent World.” The call for submissions deadline is July 4, 2018, and the submissions are rolling in–so there is already some work for us to do.
Planning Chair and Board Member, Rod Freeman is looking for volunteers to be part of the planning Committee. Some of you have already expressed interest in supporting the event and I encourage you to respond to this notice if still interested.
We know that those of you who volunteer will want to help with tangible tasks, and this year we are taking steps to help ensure that you have the opportunity to do so. In particular, our Committee members will be asked to support specific workstreams, including:
• Logistics and general event planning
If you are interested in joining the Planning Committee for Brussels, please email the Chair of the Planning Committee, Rod Freeman (email@example.com) by 6 July to let him know. When considering if you would like to volunteer, please keep in mind that this will be a working Committee. While the expectations of each volunteer should not be too onerous, you will be expected to make tangible contributions to the specific workstreams assigned to you. You will also generally be expected to participate on our planning calls as often as possible and be prepared to contribute by reporting on progress within your workstreams.
ICPHSO Planning Committees make major contributions to our programs, is one of the key benefits afforded to ICPHSO members, and play a key role in the success of our events. We hope that this structure will help ensure that participation is a rewarding experience for each volunteer. Your participation is greatly appreciated–we look forward to working with you! If you want more information on becoming an ICPHSO member, check our website for details.

“Alignment and Inclusion in a Divergent World”
ICPHSO will again collaborate with the European Commission and hold our 2018 International Symposium on November 12-13, 2018, as the lead in to the European Commission’s International Product Safety Week (November 12-15, 2018) in Brussels. As in the past, we will be holding the two-day symposium in a Commission building (Albert Borschette Congress Center (CCAB), Rue Froissart 36, 1040 Brussels, Belgium) and will use the interpretation services provided in the conference center. This will be a truly global event with regulators and stakeholders from around the world participating.
ICPHSO’s Call For Presentation deadline is June 29, 2018, so there’s still time for you to submit your proposal to be considered for presentation during the Symposium. Consideration of the Symposium’s theme in your submission may give priority consideration as we review the proposals.
All proposals will be considered and final selection will be made by the Symposium Planning Committee and the ICPHSO Executive Committee.
I look forward to reading your proposals!
