ICPHSO INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM
PLANNING COMMITTEE VOLUNTEERS WANTED

The time has come for us to convene the Planning Committee to help us bring together our 2018 International Symposium in Brussels in November. The Symposium will be held during the European Commission’s International Product Safety Week. The theme for the Symposium is “Alignment and Inclusion in a Divergent World.”  The call for submissions deadline is July 4, 2018, and the submissions are rolling in–so there is already some work for us to do.

Planning Chair and Board Member, Rod Freeman is looking for volunteers to be part of the planning Committee. Some of you have already expressed interest in supporting the event and I encourage you to respond to this notice if still interested.

We know that those of you who volunteer will want to help with tangible tasks, and this year we are taking steps to help ensure that you have the opportunity to do so. In particular, our Committee members will be asked to support specific workstreams, including:

• Publicity
• Sponsorships
• Keynotes
• Logistics and general event planning
• Programming

If you are interested in joining the Planning Committee for Brussels, please email the Chair of the Planning Committee, Rod Freeman (rfreeman@cooley.com) by 6 July to let him know. When considering if you would like to volunteer, please keep in mind that this will be a working Committee. While the expectations of each volunteer should not be too onerous, you will be expected to make tangible contributions to the specific workstreams assigned to you. You will also generally be expected to participate on our planning calls as often as possible and be prepared to contribute by reporting on progress within your workstreams.

ICPHSO Planning Committees make major contributions to our programs, is one of the key benefits afforded to ICPHSO members,  and play a key role in the success of our events. We hope that this structure will help ensure that participation is a rewarding experience for each volunteer. Your participation is greatly appreciated–we look forward to working with you!  If you want more information on becoming an ICPHSO member, check our website for details.

Themes….

ICPHSO25thAnniversaryFinal

Have you wondered why ICPHSO uses a theme for each of our three product safety conferences, and how they fit into our planning and implementation of these conferences?    This thought came to me recently as we announced the theme for our 2019 Annual Meeting and Training Symposium being held February 25-28, 2019, in Washington, D.C..  Lets take a look at the themes recently announced:

2018 Northwest Regional Product Safety Workshop, Seattle, Washington : “Product Safety in the Information Age:  Employing Better Data for Better Understanding and Solutions”

2018 International Symposium, Brussels, Belgium: “Alignment and Inclusion in a Divergent World”

2019 Annual Meeting and Training Symposium, Washington, D.C. “United for Safety”

Each of these themes were chosen  so we could focus on an area of interest to our broad stakeholder base.

For Seattle, we wanted to tap into technology issues recognizing a number of our stakeholders in the Northwestern United States and Canada focus on technology in their design and distribution of products, as well as data collection.  This seemed like a natural area for us to focus on in this region of the country.

For Brussels, we wanted to recognize our stakeholders efforts to encourage discussion of global alignment of product safety issues, but at the same time recognize who ICPHSO represents and how we want to continue to ensure we represent all stakeholders and bring their often opposite points of view to the forefront at each of our conferences.

For Washington, D.C., we went for the simple theme of recognizing what ICPHSO’s stakeholders believe and want to achieve. While Washington may not always be in agreement, ICPHSO provides the platform for health and safety professionals to come together to learn from each other, be trained in areas that may not be familiar to all and to address emerging safety issues that might not otherwise be discussed with regulators and others.

For each of our conferences we ask that the proposals you submit relate to the announced theme, although you shouldn’t necessarily feel constrained by that theme.  Use it as a guideline for your proposals and we hope when you do submit a proposal that you recognize what we are trying to achieve and relate the proposal as best you can.

Here’s some upcoming dates to keep you informed:

June 19, 2018 – Our one day Northwest Regional Workshop is almost here.  If you plan on attending, register on line as soon as possible so we can get you into the Amazon Meeting Center as quickly as possible.  Those who are pre-registered this week shouldn’t experience any delays in entry.  We will accept registration submission on line until June 19th.

June 29, 2018 – Deadline for submission of proposals for the 2018 International Symposium in Brussels, Belgium, November 12-13, 2018.  Submit your proposal today and be a part of the global safety community meeting in Brussels during the European Commission’s International Product Safety Week.  Registration and sponsorship information will be announced in the near future.
