Update on Questions and Polling At The 2019 Annual Symposium

During the recently held Annual Symposium in Washington, D.C., the meeting app we used allowed for real time polling and questions.  We have now posted on line for members and symposium attendees (under the Resource Link on the website) the questions asked during each session as well as the polling results for your continued reference).  We hope you find this posting helpful as you conduct your day to day business.  We would also like to hear back from you if you think this posting is of value or have any suggestions on its future use.

2019 International Symposium

Be sure to save the date (October 24-25, 2019) when ICPHSO heads to Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland for our first International Symposium in Ireland.  We are excited to be working with Trinity’s School of Business and holding our two-day International Symposium on their historic campus, which is located in the heart of Dublin city centre.  As more details are available, the website will be updated.  For now,  be sure to Save the Date!

ICPHSO Conference Locations Wanted!

ICPHSOCompanyBanner2019

Annual Symposium

As many of you know, ICPHSO selects its conference locations many years in advance.  Our three conferences consist of an Annual Meeting and Training Symposium held yearly in Orlando, Florida, and every third year in Washington, D.C. at the end of February.  Orlando was originally selected as the home of the Annual Symposium since it was a good location and reasonable for both domestic and international flights.  From the beginning, a significant concern of the founders of ICPHSO was providing an efficient and fairly inexpensive means to attend ICPHSO and Orlando was the location that was selected.  Beginning in 2010, ICPHSO began to hold its Annual Symposium in the Washington, D.C. area every third year.  This move was prompted by a suggestion from then CPSC Commissioners that if the ICPHSO Symposium was held in the DC area, regulators from the around the federal government interested in product safety issues could attend.  While we did hold a couple of selected conferences prior to 2010 in Bethesda, Maryland and Washington, D.C., we had never undertaken a long-term approach to returning until 2010 and we have been back to DC every third year since.  After just completing our 2019 Symposium in Washington, D.C., we anticipate returning to the Washington, D.C. area again in 2022 and we recently took steps to solicit information from appropriate size hotels who can host our growing number attendees for when we come back.

Regional and International Conferences

Our Regional and International conference locations in recent years has been generally as a result of one of our company/organization members or a government entity expressing interest in hosting our conference.

Regional Workshop:

Our regional workshops are held in North America, generally in June/July of each year.  We work  to ensure different yearly geographical locations to attract the largest number of attendees as possible from areas where travel to Florida or Washington, D.C. may not always be possible due to budget constraints. We work with companies/organizations who have the space and are willing to host ICPHSO at their corporation location. We will be in Saint Louis at St Louis University on July 11, 2019 for our Regional Workshop this year.  We anticipate returning to the west coast of the U.S. in 2020 for our next Regional Workshop.

International Symposium:

Our International Symposium is held outside the United States generally in October/November, and we usually work with a government entity or company who is willing to host ICPHSO for the two-day Symposium.  Having a host keeps our costs down and allows us to charge minimum registration fees to attend.  Since at least 2012, we have been fortunate to collaborate with the European Commission to schedule our International Symposium either just before or after the Commission’s International Product Safety Week activities.  Our collaboration with the European Commission continues and we anticipate returning to Brussels again in 2020 to take advantage of having many different regulators present during our Symposium.  This collaboration has been one of added value to ICPHSO and we look forward to continuing to work with the European Commission on future conference.

Hosting an ICPHSO Regional Workshop/International Symposium

For the first time, we have now posted an ICPHSO Host Prospectus on our website in an effort to hear from ICPHSO members and conference attendees interested in hosting our Regional Workshop or International Symposium in 2021 and beyond.   Included in the document is information on what hosting entails as well as the benefits received from hosting one of our conference.

As we continue to plan for our future, please look at the hosting document and if you have any interest in collaborating with ICPHSO by hosting either a Regional Workshop or an International Symposium, please complete the form included with the document and we will contact you.

If you have any questions, please free to contact me at marc.schoem@icphso.org.  I would love to hear from you.

Regards,

Marc

Themes….

ICPHSO25thAnniversaryFinal

Have you wondered why ICPHSO uses a theme for each of our three product safety conferences, and how they fit into our planning and implementation of these conferences?    This thought came to me recently as we announced the theme for our 2019 Annual Meeting and Training Symposium being held February 25-28, 2019, in Washington, D.C..  Lets take a look at the themes recently announced:

2018 Northwest Regional Product Safety Workshop, Seattle, Washington : “Product Safety in the Information Age:  Employing Better Data for Better Understanding and Solutions”

2018 International Symposium, Brussels, Belgium: “Alignment and Inclusion in a Divergent World”

2019 Annual Meeting and Training Symposium, Washington, D.C. “United for Safety”

Each of these themes were chosen  so we could focus on an area of interest to our broad stakeholder base.

For Seattle, we wanted to tap into technology issues recognizing a number of our stakeholders in the Northwestern United States and Canada focus on technology in their design and distribution of products, as well as data collection.  This seemed like a natural area for us to focus on in this region of the country.

For Brussels, we wanted to recognize our stakeholders efforts to encourage discussion of global alignment of product safety issues, but at the same time recognize who ICPHSO represents and how we want to continue to ensure we represent all stakeholders and bring their often opposite points of view to the forefront at each of our conferences.

For Washington, D.C., we went for the simple theme of recognizing what ICPHSO’s stakeholders believe and want to achieve. While Washington may not always be in agreement, ICPHSO provides the platform for health and safety professionals to come together to learn from each other, be trained in areas that may not be familiar to all and to address emerging safety issues that might not otherwise be discussed with regulators and others.

For each of our conferences we ask that the proposals you submit relate to the announced theme, although you shouldn’t necessarily feel constrained by that theme.  Use it as a guideline for your proposals and we hope when you do submit a proposal that you recognize what we are trying to achieve and relate the proposal as best you can.

Here’s some upcoming dates to keep you informed:

June 19, 2018 – Our one day Northwest Regional Workshop is almost here.  If you plan on attending, register on line as soon as possible so we can get you into the Amazon Meeting Center as quickly as possible.  Those who are pre-registered this week shouldn’t experience any delays in entry.  We will accept registration submission on line until June 19th.

June 29, 2018 – Deadline for submission of proposals for the 2018 International Symposium in Brussels, Belgium, November 12-13, 2018.  Submit your proposal today and be a part of the global safety community meeting in Brussels during the European Commission’s International Product Safety Week.  Registration and sponsorship information will be announced in the near future.

2019 Annual Symposium, Washington, D.C. – The theme “United for Safety” has been selected and the Call For Presentations will be announced soon.  Check the ICPHSO website for further updates on proposal submissions and deadlines for the Annual Symposium.

Looking forward to seeing you in Seattle!

Marc

ICPHSO Northwest Regional Workshop Agenda Set

The 2018 ICPHSO Northwest Regional Training Workshop Planning Committee has come up with six compelling training panels to be presented on June 19, 2018, at the Amazon Center in Seattle, Washington.  Panel speakers and additional details are being finalized and will be posted when available.  The panels include topics in program areas that include: Risk Assessment; Emerging Issues; Regulatory Compliance and Recall Effectiveness; Supply Chain; IoT and Import Targeting.  We are also pleased that CPSC Acting Chairman Ann Marie Buerkle will be delivering our luncheon keynote presentation.

More than 20 proposals were submitted, and while it was difficult to limit our selections, the panels will be most compelling and of interest to our broad array of stakeholders.  In addition to a welcome reception the evening before the workshop, there will be a port tour of Seattle conducted by representatives from CPSC and CBP.  Limited space is available and we will be notifying those who registered and indicated an interest in participating in the tour shortly.  Registration remains open, hotel rooms are limited and sponsorships are still available,  With less than 7 weeks to go, act now to be part of the conversation.

At the conclusion of the workshop, ICPHSO will host an “Information and Inclusion” Reception for all attendees, reinforcing the mission and vision of ICPHSO to provide a neutral forum for all product safety stakeholders to learn, network and share information.  We hope you can stay and join us.

Thanks to the following companies and organizations who are sponsors for the workshop.  We have additional space left as well as promotional items if you are interested in further supporting ICPHSO.  Sponsorships help keep the cost down for our attendees and allows us to provide funding for people and organizations that might  not otherwise be able to participate in our safety conferences so all voices can be heard.
